‘THE BELLS’ ring for
The Australian Jazz Awards 2008

The 2008 winners for The Australian Jazz Bell Awards were announced at last night at BMW Edge, Federation Square, Melbourne in the presence of Julia Gillard, Deputy Prime Minister and Therese Rein, first lady of Australia and many local and international jazz luminaries.

BERNIE McGANN, the inductee to the Graeme Bell Hall of Fame was announced by the
Honourable Julia Gillard MP.

The Bells, inaugurated in 2003, celebrate Australian jazz and musicians across eight categories, recognising excellence in the area of recording, presentation and composition.

The judging panel comprised of prominent local and international jazz figures and critics who selected the 24 finalists for the best Australian jazz artist and albums released in 2007.

The 2008 Australian Jazz Awards winners are as follows:

The Renault Australian Jazz Artist of the Year: Julien Wilson

The Gibson Best Australian Classic Jazz Album of the Year: Sweet Lowdowns – Cuttin’ Capers

The ABC Best Australian Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year:
Andrea Keller Quartet – Little Claps
(Nominees:  Allan Browne Quintet - The Drunken Boat, Phil Slater – The Thousands)

The Ubertas Best Australian Jazz Ensemble: Phil Slater Quartet
(Nominees:  Allan Browne Quintet – The Drunken Boat, Julien Wilson Trio – Trio – Live)

The APRA Best Australian Jazz Composition of the Year: Eugene Ball - The Fool Poets Portion
(Nominees: Phil Slater - The Thousands, Stephen Magnusson - 14 Little Creatures)

The AICE Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album of the Year: Megan Washington – Night Light
(Nominees: Elana Stone - Elana Stone, Sweet Lowdowns – Cuttin’ Capers)

The Tarrawarra Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year: Sam Anning
